I first met Winnie through Colin her younger brother when I was about 17. She became one of my bridesmaids when Colin and I were married.
Winnie was everybody’s “go to” person and seemed to me to be very reliable and understanding. Over the years, even after Colin and I moved to Australia, Winnie remained one of my true and closest friends. We spoke regularly on the telephone and she kept us up to date with the family news. She visited us in Australia a couple of times and I remember her embracing our Australian way of life which to her must have appeared extraordinarily easy going coupled with the vast distances we travelled which we take for granted.
Winnie hosted Karen and I when we visited the UK following the death of Colin. I clearly remember her organising a family get together where almost all of the family were present.

Goodbye my good friend and we will meet up again further down the track.

I only met Winnie for a short time when she came out to Australia…she left a lasting impression of a very gentle lady with a lovely smile.
Reunited with her siblings at last.

Aunty Winnie was one of the most peaceful people I have ever known. She was a great organiser and was able to get things done at the drop of a hat while remaining calm and respectful. I think of her as a glimpse into the past when people were quiet, organised and respectful. Although I haven’t seen her for quite a while, every time I spoke to her she had a great impact on me.

I have included below a verse of a poem written by AB (Banjo) Patterson a well known Australian Poet which just about sums it all up.

The Daylight is Dying

The daylight is dying away in the west,
The wild birds are flying in silence to rest;
In leafage and frondage where shadows are deep,
They pass to its bond age – the kingdom of sleep.
And watched in their sleeping by stars in the height,
They rest in your keeping Oh, wonderful night.

Take care Aunty Win. You are in the hands of your family now and I am sure we will all meet again in the future.
