John played bridge in Thanet for many years. In 2008 the EBU started a new initiative whereby a bridge teacher could create a whole new club. This is what John did bringing a crowd of players, some of whom were brand new to bridge and some played socially, through the EBU Bridge for All course to the stage where the club was able to run regular duplicates, initially on Wednesday evenings and then also on Monday afternoons and at this point John handed over all the equipment he had bought boards, cards and a dealing machine to what now became a members’ club, Broadstairs Bridge Club.

You often see in tributes to club officials’ statements ‘that without ‘x’ this club would not exist but in the case of John and Broadstairs Bridge Club this is literally true. The club was created through John’s vision and his lessons and all the practical steps he took to make it a reality. The conversion to a members’ club was a real one. Although John remained on the Committee for many years he was not at all possessive of the club and was never happier than when his protégées were able to take over the running of the Club themselves. When John stood down from active involvement with the Committee he was unanimously elected as Honorary Life President of the Club in 2019.

John Cox was the founder of Broadstairs Bridge Club. He taught many of the members how to play bridge and then handed the club over to them. Without John Broadstairs Bridge Club would not exist
