I’m writing on behalf of a group of friends, taught by Andy in the 1960s. Hearing of his death, sixty years on, we were all saddened and remembered him fondly as an inspiring teacher and a good man. His positive influence encouraged our love of literature, and we all remember the books, plays and poems he taught us, ranging from Shakespeare through Donne, Dickens, Eliot and Steinbeck to Dylan.
Andy was very open to new ideas. We remember him writing the lyrics of A Whiter Shade of Pale on the board and asking the class to analyse/decipher them. He introduced us to Hamlet as an adolescent struggling to come to terms with his mother's new relationship with his uncle. He was tuned into adolescents but treated us as intellectual equals.
Andy was a great teacher who encouraged us to enjoy English literature and enriched the rest of our lives.
