Jim Atkinson, beloved husband to Rena for 61 years, father to Paul and Adrian, grandfather to Cameron and Claudia, father in law to Keeley and Vivienne passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening with his two sons by his side at St. Giles Hospice in Whittington. Six weeks before he was diagnosed with bile duct cancer. Son of Annie and Augustus Atkinson, Jim was a bombardier in the British Army, Elder in the West Church of Scotland, Captain of the 2nd Port-Glasgow Boys Brigade, and a Scottish Rowing Champion. In 1974, Jim and Rena started a new life in Lichfield, Staffordshire when he was relocated with Fescol. More recently he was a proud Lichfield Rotarian regularly raising much needed funds for St. Giles hospice, which would ultimately become his resting place. He will be laid to rest at Fradley Crematorium on Friday 29 September 2017 at 10:30 followed by a lunch for family and friends. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer donations to St Giles Hospice Whittington, Lichfield. Thanks to all the staff at St Giles and Marie Curie who looked after Jim with care and dignity and gave huge comfort to the family. Deepest condolences to your family. My name is Jason Goodhall and i knew Jim from work at Poetons for over 25 years. He was instrumental in my career path enabling me to work in America for 7 years and helped with references when i moved back. He was a grand old gentleman, do anything for you and give you a good old telling off when you needed it (with all the Scottish cursing) as i often did when i was an apprentice working with him in Gloucester. Jim worked extremely hard all his life and i asked him often if he had retired yet and i guess he never did but he was always happiest when he was wheeling and dealing, we used to call him the Scottish del boy behind his back. I know he touched many peoples lives all over this world and I know he will be deeply missed.
Again my sincere condolences and best wishes for the family in difficult time, and may James rest in peace.
Jason Goodhall
