DorothyBARLOWIt is with great sadness that we announce the death of my mother, Dorothy Barlow nee Schofield, widow of the late Holden Barlow. She passed away peacefully at Highfield Hall Care Home, Haslingden on Wednesday, February 12 2025. She is survived by her son David, grandchildren Jane and Andrew and great-grandchildren Naomi, Simon and Rebecca. Dorothy was born at 39 Poplar Street, Haslingden and lived in Haslingden all her life. Her mother Hilda was insistent on Dorothy getting an education beyond school and she took elocution lessons, which she remembered many years later. She started work at 14, sharing a set of eight Lancashire looms at Sykeside Mill, and enjoyed dancing at the Public Hall, where she met Holden, her husband to be. Holden was in the army from 1939-1946, when he was eventually de-mobbed from Austria. Dorothy and Holden married on cup final day 1946 and set up home in Pine Street. Their son David was born during the heavy snowfalls of January 1947. Holden was re-employed by Porritts and Spencer in Helmshore after his war service and Dorothy went to work there some years later. Whilst living in Pine Street, they were great friends with Ann and Jim next door. Later, they moved to a bungalow on Helmshore Road, and when Porritts and Spencer closed Dorothy went to work at the Post Office in Rawtenstall. Dorothy lost her husband, Holden, in 1988 but was herself in reasonably good health until advancing years got the better of her, and she eventually moved into Highfield Hall Care Home where they looked after her very well. Dorothy enjoyed her 100th birthday at Highfield and was looking forward to celebrating her 105th, but sadly passed away just three weeks and three days short of this milestone. Dorothy’s funeral service will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, February 26 at Pleasant Street Chapel of Rest, Haslingden led by the Revd Judith Balkwell, followed by interment at Haslingden Cemetery. For any further information please contact either Georgina or Paul at Johnson, Durning and Woods Funeral Service.
