Following an epic 22 year battle with cancer, the formidable Santa Basu passed away peacefully at the age of 78.
A beloved wife, devoted mother and grandmother, Santa was a remarkable woman who dedicated much of her life to her family, education and the performing arts.
For many years, she taught children across the county about Indian culture, religion, dance and the arts, fostering understanding and appreciation among generations. A proud advocate of her heritage, she was a towering presence in the British Bengali community.
She first came to prominence in 1965 when she won the National Rifle Shooting Championship of India and went on to compete in the 1966 Rifle World Championships in Germany at the tender age of 19.
An adopted Yellowbelly, she held the title of County Champion in rifle shooting. Santa was the cherished wife of her late husband, P.K. Basu a respected surgeon. She was a caring mother to two sons, her daughter-in-law and was a doting grandmother.
Her warmth, wisdom, and indomitable strength will be dearly missed.
The family wish to thank the cancer services at Nottingham City Hospital and the community nursing teams. A heartfelt thank you goes to the staff at Holmleigh Care Home in Navenby and all the carers who showed her so much kindness in her final months.
A memorial service was held on 20th June where 150 people attended to celebrate her life.
The family are collecting for Cancer Research UK as per Santa's wishes.
