Brenda MaryBLOXAM(née Humphries) (1923 - 2024) Brenda died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, in Limeslade on the 15th October 2024 at the age of 101.
She was the beloved wife of Wallace Bloxam (deceased), adored mother to Alexandra Roe and Elizabeth Bloxam, and mother-in-law to David Roe (deceased) and Ian Shaw.
Born in London, she had two sisters (Audrey and Lorna) and began her working life in the Bank of England during the Second World War. After moving to Swansea (where Wallace Bloxam was lecturer in geology at Swansea University), she embraced a vibrant social life, that included up and coming artists and writers such as Kingsley Amis. In 1962 along with Margaret Aeron-Thomas, Dorothy Thomas and Eve Thomas, she co-founded Wales' first privately owned contemporary art gallery (The Dillwyn Gallery) in Swansea. Latterly, in 1973, Brenda became sole proprietor of what was by then The Attic Gallery (established by Dorothy Thomas). By the time she retired, the Attic Gallery had become one of Wales' most prestigious contemporary art galleries, and until 2018 was run by Alexandra and David Roe.
Her long and extraordinary life was blessed with good health and in more recent years she loved going to Langland Bay to enjoy the sun outside our beach hut.
She will be missed beyond words, not least by her beloved cat, Biscuit, who was constantly beside her during her final days.
The funeral will be a small and private event, but there will be a memorial celebration of her life in May 2025.
