I was shocked and heartbroken to hear the news of Darryl's passing.

I have known of Darryl for seven years now, since Christmas 2017 when I was gifted his brilliant hardback book, "David Bowie Made Me Gay". This book is the most comprehensive dive into the previous one hundred years of LGBT+ culture in music that I have read.

When I found the author's profile on Facebook I thought I would contact him to compliment him on such a fantastic achievement. I also mentioned that I made music.

I was amazed that Darryl got back to me with a reply saying, "I wish I had included you in the book". He told me he'd been listening to my music all afternoon.

To have the support and recognition of a highly respected musicologist and LGBT+ archivist as I was developing my second solo album was indispensable and I shared demos with Darryl and consulted with him on pretty much every decision including the cover art. He also reviewed the album and said it was his favourite of that year.

Later I was proud to have had a small hand in research for his books "The Velvet Mafia" and "Pride, Pop & Politics". I also made a guest appearance on The Worlds Worst Records Radio Show and recorded jingles for the show.

What a brilliant, kind and generous mind and soul we have lost. The passing of the great man that was Darryl W Bullock is not only a loss to the LGBT+ community and the music world but most of all my heart goes out to his husband of sixteen years Niall Milligan, his sister Jayne, his loved ones and family and the beloved animals he shared his life with and deeply cared for.

The irrepressible, irreplaceable Darryl W Bullock has left a hole in this world that no one else can fill.

Goodbye you incredible human being and thank you so much for all that you have done for me.

I love you. I just wish I could have known you more. 💔 x

We are so shocked and saddened to learn of Darryl W. Bullock’s passing. We knew him only briefly - inspired by his book David Bowie Made Me Gay, we were thrilled when Darryl kindly accepted our invitation to be keynote speaker at the symposium at MQFF in Australia late last year. We had a ball with him that day, and his presentation was just perfect. Even in that short time we spent with him, we could easily tell that Daryll was a kind, wise, sharp, and hilarious person. We’re heartbroken by his loss, but so grateful we had the chance to cross paths with him. Please accept our condolences. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

We were online friends for over a decade, joking about how we'd never met. That we never will makes my heart ache.

I will miss your kindness, humour and generosity of spirit. You were a good man.

Niall my heart breaks for you, the love you and Darryl so clearly shared was beautiful.

I knew Darryl through our love of the World’s Worst Records. First his blog, his books and then his weekly radio show. I will be visiting the charity shops of Cumbria this week on his behalf.
