The obituary notice of Jeremy James CARTER

It has been 26 years since my last piano lesson with Mr. Carter at Wycliffe College, yet the lessons he taught me have never faded from my heart.

Mr. Carter was an exceptional teacher—clever, patient, and wonderfully funny. His ability to inspire, encourage, and bring joy into every lesson made learning the piano an unforgettable experience.

He remains the greatest piano teacher I have ever had the privilege of learning from. I am deeply honored to have received even a small part of his wisdom, guidance, and passion for music. The knowledge, values, and memories he shared with me will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Since I started my YouTube channel a year ago, whenever I completed a new piano performance, I would send the video to Mr. Carter. It meant so much to me that he always took the time to watch them and share his thoughts, often with the same warmth and sense of humour that I remembered from his lessons.

One of the last messages he sent me after watching my performance was:

"Very impressive and great finger work too! You need a cooler pair of trousers though – camo is out of fashion."

"You must put a lot of time into this. Good for you – always great to see people pursuing a hobby so seriously. Keep it up Bryan!!"

Those words will always make me smile.

Although he was unable to reply to the final video I sent him, I find great comfort in knowing that, before he left us, he knew I was still playing the piano and continuing the journey that he helped begin all those years ago. That means more to me than words can express.

Thank you, Mr. Carter, for shaping not only my musical journey but also the person I have become. Your legacy lives on in every note I play, and you will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Rest in peace, Mr. Carter.

Thank you Jeremy for the fun and laughs we all shared as part of the 2nd floor teaching club at CLC. Never a dull moment.

I had the honour of being a pupil of Jeremy and was very fond of him. I also had profound respect for him as a person and as a musician. I am deeply distressed at his passing.

Jeremy was a highly valued musical friend and colleague to me - in our teaching together at Rendcomb College and as a fellow ABRSM examiner. In those settings we shared many experiences and anecdotes, Jeremy’s dry sense of humour always coming to the surface. We have lost a fantastically accomplished pianist and teacher. Taken from us far too early, his passing will leave a significant gap in Cheltenham’s musical fraternity. Rest in peace, Jeremy, it has been a pleasure knowing you.
