The obituary notice of Alderman Iain Black COLQUHOUN

I worked with Iain for many years, during his time as a councillor and scrutiny chairman and also accompanying him to conferences, where we were able to share some of the good practice we had developed locally.

Iain was a dedicated councillor, but it was his warmth, humour and wonderful ability to tell a story that made him such a pleasure to be around. He had a gift for bringing subjects to life, and there was usually a good tale to be told.

One that has always stayed with me was his account of helping a constituent during the 2007 flood — which somehow involved him chasing and eventually catching escaped pond fish as they made their way around the entire garden! It was classic Iain: practical, committed, and with a story to make everyone laugh afterwards.

I remember him with great affection. He was a real pleasure to know, and will be greatly missed.

I remember when Iain was first elected as a councillor. I remember how , throughout his time as an elected member, he commanded respect across the chamber, because of the way he conducted his duties and carried himself - with humility, professionalism and a decent dose of good and timely humour.
RIP.

Although we sat on opposite sides of the political aisle at the time, he was a leader who commanded immediate respect; when he spoke, everyone listened. He possessed a rare ability to navigate the deepest complexities of our community with balance, nuance, and profound empathy. By consistently cutting through partisan politics, he stayed focused entirely on the human element of public service. He was a distinguished councillor, an exceptional public servant, and, above all, a deeply decent human being.
