Dad had a brilliant sense of humour that could light up any room, and even now, as I think back to some of the jokes and moments we shared, I can’t help but smile. Despite the challenges and external forces that sometimes sought to disrupt our father-son relationship, they could never diminish the love and connection we shared. Ours was a bond forged in mutual respect and unconditional love, and nothing could take that away.

Above all, my father was a man of God. A devoted Catholic, he never faltered in his belief in our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. His faith was the foundation of his life, and it carried him through every trial. Even in his final hours, Dad’s unwavering devotion shone brightly when he was able to say the Lord's Prayer. His relationship with God was a testament to the strength and peace that faith can bring, and it is that same faith that will continue to guide him in eternity.

As the Gospel of John reminds us, “He who followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12). Dad’s life was a reflection of this light, and it is that light that will guide him as he rests in peace, reunited with Mum.

I wrote to you a year ago, Dad, and told you how much you meant to me—and now, I say it again: I’ve always loved you, and I always will. You were my hero, my role model, and my friend. Your strength, courage, and unwavering love will continue to inspire me every day of my life.

Rest peacefully, Dad, reunited with Mum. Thank you for everything—for the laughter, the lessons, and the love. You will be forever missed but never forgotten. Until we meet again, I love you.

Your proud and grateful son,
Damian.

A Tribute to My Courageous Father, Vincent James Cunningham and Husband to My Mum, Antoinette Edna Cunningham

It is with profound sadness that I share the passing of my beloved father, Vincent James Cunningham, who left us peacefully on Sunday, 12th January, at the age of 81. A man of immense courage and determination, Dad faced every challenge in life with unwavering strength and an indomitable spirit.

Dad’s incredible journey began when, as a young boy, he joined the Royal Marines as a junior drummer boy. Even then, his courage and resolve shone brightly. When he was old enough, he undertook and completed the grueling commando training, including the legendary 30-miler—a feat that perfectly embodied his steadfast determination.

He later married my dear mum, the love of his life, who sadly passed away in 2020. Together, they built a life filled with love, devotion, and purpose. During my dad’s deployment to Singapore, I was born, and from that moment, he embraced his role as a father with the same dedication and passion that defined every aspect of his life.

Dad was so much more than a father to me—he was my guide, my teacher, and my greatest supporter. I have cherished memories of the countless days we spent fishing together, the many hours we played snooker side by side, and all the times we shared a pint and a laugh over a game of darts at the pub in Turnchapel. These moments weren’t just pastimes—they were lessons in patience, camaraderie, and love. He taught me so much about life, and the bond we built is one I will treasure forever.
