I am writing this tribute on behalf of our Gateshead Boys' Grammar Reunion Group that has been meeting twice a year since 2016. Ian was a regular attender and we last saw him in March 2026. We have all known Ian since 1964 and his closer friends were always made very welcome at his family home where he later settled, and spent his last years. At his family home we first experimented with home brew making in the attic, and possibly just escaped being poisoned. We had many adventures exploring Low Fell pubs and parties. Ian introduced us to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, eventually getting us hooked. I actually hitchhiked down to Oxford with him, experienced punting on the Thames, and probably met some of his long term friends. I estimated that there were more than 20 of us from the Boys' Grammar at his funeral. The day after the funeral 17 of us attended another school reunion at the Bridge pub. It was sad not seeing Ian walking across to the Bridge past the Keep, and joining us. However, we all stood up and raised a glass to a well loved friend. Rest in Peace Ian.

Ian, you were there for me when I needed it. Were always happy to talk to me on the phone. You were always welcoming and showed me so many historic sites around the North East. You even did a reading at my wedding, despite me having the audacity to edit the words of the mighty Bob Dylan. Then you extended the same kindness to my daughter. Thank you for being a father figure and a loyal, caring person. I miss you.

Condolences to Sue and Kate. I hope you find strength when times are tough and eventually remember with more smiles than sadness.

You were a great friend Ian over these past 56 years since we first met at university aged 18. Keeping in touch with annual reunions in Oxford and weekly video calls on a Sunday night. You are going to missed by all who knew you. We ‘Oxford Guys’ will keep on seeing each other and will think about you when we do. Say hi to Phil and Eddie when you see them in the after life - 7 becomes 4 down here on earth. Love you mate….
