I owe Michael my career - he identified my talent as a linguist at an early age and without that nudge neither myself nor my parents wouldn't have been aware of it. He could also see beyond the 'here and now' and could see one's potential no matter what mistakes one had made. The best teacher that I have ever known.

I will never forget that Michael gave me my first proper teaching post back in 1983 and, during my time at West Buckland, had an important influence on my career. Reflecting on those years, it was his generosity and encouragement that made such an impact. My sincere condolences to Pat on her loss and I hope that the beautiful Thanksgiving Service at All Saints was of some comfort to her and all those mourn the passing of a true gentleman who lived a very full life of service to others.
