Our Dad, Jim Fethon, was known to many as Gentlemen Jim a name that suited him perfectly.
As children, me Tony and later Michael would count down the days until Dad came home from sea. Every time he sailed away, we missed him terribly and we eagerly awaited his return. That feeling of missing him is one we know all too well again today.
Dad believed in taking the hard road rather than the easy one and tried to instill those values in all of us. He worked incredibly hard throughout his life, making sacrifices without complaint to provide for his family. Looking back, I can only remember one occasion when our Mam and Dad argued, and that was because of me and Tony. His children were always at the centre of everything he did.
When he was home he worked hard and played hard. He treated our mam like a princess and devoted himself completely to his family. As we grew older, it puzzled us that Dad never seemed to want much for himself. We eventually realised that seeing his family happy was what brought him happiness. He was one of the most selfless men you could ever hope and have the pleasure in meeting.
Dad wasn't just known as Gentlemen Jim because he was polite or well-mannered. He earned that name through the way he lived his life with kindness, integrity, hard work and the love for those around him.
My Wife told me that the best people in this life have the best platform in the next so, Dad you must be King of the Super Heroes up there. RIP Dad (gentlemen Jim) xxxx
Your son James Fethon
