Charles DouglasHILLCharles Douglas Hill, beloved grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Thursday morning in his room at Thorntoun Estate Care Home. Charlie was born on the 15th of October, 1931 in Paterson, New Jersey. His parents - Charles W Hill and Janet Blair Smith - emigrated to the United States in 1920's, and married in Manhattan in 1928, having Charlie's brother George in 1930, and Charlie in 1931.

The Hill family returned to Glasgow in 1933, where Charlie spent his youth, before being relocated to Nitshill during the war. It was in their family home on Darvel Street where Charlie was living when he met his future wife, Catherine Callaghan. The two were married at MacGregor Memorial Church on the 12th of March, 1954, and welcomed their daughter Janette, at the end of 1955.

Charlie spent most of his life as a wood-worker, and kept a shed filled with tools, ready to assist his family and neighbours with projects, even into his final years. As a young man, Charlie took an interest in draughts, first playing by mail and going on to play for Scotland. Charlie always appreciated the company of a fuzzy friend, and had several canine companions throughout his life, including his beloved lady Cindy, followed by his sweet Jura, who he enjoyed taking down to the nearby fields to throw a ball around.

Charlie and Cathy moved to their home on Macbeth Road in Stewarton in 1991, and he lived there until moving to Thorntoun Estate in August 2023. Before the Pandemic, Charlie loved going down to the Stewarton Arms for a drink, a trip he made a few times a week. Later on Charlie enjoyed his wee dram at home every day, without fail.

Charlie will always be remembered for his generous and friendly nature, and his warming smile. He was a kind and invested Papa to his two grandsons, and will be dearly missed.

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife Catherine and his daughter Janette, and is survived by his two grandsons Paul and Neil, and his great-granddaughter Isabella.

An open service will be held at Holmsford Bridge Crematorium, Dreghorn, on Wednesday the 24th of January at 1.30pm. A reception will be held afterwards, venue TBC. Donations to Ayrshire Hospice would be greatly appreciated.
