A bright, fresh morning in September 40 years ago, Hordes of school children, wearing bottle green tops, and truly vile ties, making their way down a residential street to Fallowfield C of E High School. I was one of them. I was also totally petrified - I didn't know anybody at this huge (to me) new school. As luck would have it found myself sat next to Ivan at registration and suddenly, I had a friend. We both liked similar things, which I clearly remember didn't include learning French, sorry Madam Kacoola. Thanks in no small part to Ivan's permanently bright outlook combined by his wonderous knowledge of hijinks taking place further up the school (thanks Michael) I had a far better experience at school than, with the hindsight of age, I would of done otherwise. The year past and sadly we lost touch (for younger people reading this - FaceBook & WhatsApp have not always been a thing). Though fortunately we did get back in touch a few years ago. Ivan told me about his daughter, his wife and his life in Lincolnshire. I am genuinely happy that he seems to of had a good & happy life and my heart goes out to those left behind as it was cut unfairly short.
Rest in peace my friend. Richard
