SteveLOMASSteve Lomas, son of Frank and Doris Lomas of Nangreave Road Stockport, died on April 27 after a long illness.

Steve was a kind, thoughtful and tactful person and a beloved son, brother, husband, father and grandpops. He attended St George's Primary, Mile End School and Didsbury Teacher Training College.

He met his wife Jane at a disco at the Alma Lodge in 1970. They were together for more than 50 years, marrying in 1977 and having 2 sons, Richard and Jason, and 2 granddaughters, to all of whom he was extremely devoted, supportive and proud.

A history teacher by profession, he taught at Hulme Hall and West Hill, later moving to South Yorkshire, teaching at Kimberworth and Wingfield secondaries. He had an informal and engaging style of teaching which brought people with him and meant he was a role model and immensely well-liked throughout his career.

He was also a student of the world wars and ran trips to the battlefields of West Flanders for many years. He attached great importance to conveying the sacrifices of those who had served on both sides in the Great War.

Steve was a lifelong Stockport County fan, attending his first game in 1959 at the age of 5. He signed schoolboy forms with the club and was for a time touted as a possible future number 1. He walked away from the game at 16, returning later to play for local sides including Old Stoconians. He played on into his 40s and also coached for a time. On retiring to Glossop in 2015 he was a founding member and Chairman of the Oakwood Walking Football Club.

A funeral service will take place at R Good Funeral Services, 20 Buxton Road, Stockport SK2 6NU at midday on Tuesday 20th May.

Steve was a great friend to all at Oakwood Glossop Walking Football Club. He was the founder of our club in 2020 and has been it's Chairman and driving force, both on and off the field, ever since. Steve will be remembered for his friendly and welcoming nature, his sense of humour, and not least his ability as a footballer and goalkeeper. He will be greatly missed. The thoughts of all at the club are with Steve's wife Jane and family at this sad time.

Family get togethers will never be as funny now Steve has passed. He was always great company, always cracking jokes and never taking things too seriously. Steve used to message me nearly every day for around 18 months on the run up to my wedding with a count down to the big day like a doomsday clock…. “It’s not too late to pull the plug” 😂 …… always great banter, he will be greatly missed but never forgotten 🙏🏽

I met Steve as a colleague but he quickly became a valued friend. His unique sense of humor and infectious laugh got us through many a long day at the chalkface. He was a great teacher who inspired his students to love history and he was admired and respected by his colleagues. Steve's legacy is a host of happy memories of trips to Belgium and life at school generally. Barry and I are so glad we've had Steve and Jane in our lives . Gone too soon. X

A really sad loss of a great character - Many years could pass between meet-ups but Steve never seemed to age and certainly stayed extremely consistent to his unique brand of humour! Our hearts go out to Jane, Richard and Jason and hope all the happy memories will see you through the tough times lots of love John & Kerry xxxx
