SteveLOMASSteve Lomas, son of Frank and Doris Lomas of Nangreave Road Stockport, died on April 27 after a long illness.

Steve was a kind, thoughtful and tactful person and a beloved son, brother, husband, father and grandpops. He attended St George's Primary, Mile End School and Didsbury Teacher Training College.

He met his wife Jane at a disco at the Alma Lodge in 1970. They were together for more than 50 years, marrying in 1977 and having 2 sons, Richard and Jason, and 2 granddaughters, to all of whom he was extremely devoted, supportive and proud.

A history teacher by profession, he taught at Hulme Hall and West Hill, later moving to South Yorkshire, teaching at Kimberworth and Wingfield secondaries. He had an informal and engaging style of teaching which brought people with him and meant he was a role model and immensely well-liked throughout his career.

He was also a student of the world wars and ran trips to the battlefields of West Flanders for many years. He attached great importance to conveying the sacrifices of those who had served on both sides in the Great War.

Steve was a lifelong Stockport County fan, attending his first game in 1959 at the age of 5. He signed schoolboy forms with the club and was for a time touted as a possible future number 1. He walked away from the game at 16, returning later to play for local sides including Old Stoconians. He played on into his 40s and also coached for a time. On retiring to Glossop in 2015 he was a founding member and Chairman of the Oakwood Walking Football Club.

A funeral service will take place at R Good Funeral Services, 20 Buxton Road, Stockport SK2 6NU at midday on Tuesday 20th May.

My uncle Steve was a great guy. His great sense of humour made family gatherings that bit more enjoyable and he made me laugh lots of times. Steve came to see me when I was very unwell in hospital, even when he wasn't too well himself and I feel very blessed that he did this, he was a good uncle and I will miss him very much. He taught me what dry humour was, something which I use a lot! Thank you for being my uncle Steve. Xxxxxxxxxxxx

I'll always remember Jane and Steve working away through their college work at the kitchen table at Chester Road. They were always together. Always joking. We'll cherish our memories of Steve. 🥹

As most say, after someone passes, I wish I had more conversations with him. As his young neice, my memories were of him at family get togethers, trying to put the football on, or making people laugh. He made us all laugh. Silly stuff. He was a good guy. X

I have had the pleasure of knowing Steve for the past 48 years, as I'm married to his wife Jane's sister Liz.
All the family get togethers, birthdays, Christmases, parties etc.
Discussion around the dinner table most Sundays at the in-laws would bring interesting after dinner conversation, with plenty of tongue in cheek nuggets slipped in just to get a debate started
We (Liz and me) were lucky enough to go to Belgium with Steve and Jane on a tour of the war graves, where Steve was in his element offering up lots of information and taking us to some incredible sites.
One in particular was the last post that took place nightly at the Menin gate, a very emotional and poignant service, that will stay with me forever, as will my memories of Steve.
God rest your soul.
