MARC TAYLORCorporal Marc Taylor, who died in Iraq on 28 September, 2004, aged 27, served with the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
He was killed in an ambush before his wife gave birth to their second child.
The Ministry of Defence described the soldier, who was nicknamed "Spud" as "a calm, confident leader" and a devoted father to his two-year-old daughter Sophia.
He served in the Army for 11 years and was leading a team within the Serious Crimes Unit just before he died.
His pregnant widow Olivia described him as a "hero" who strove to help the people of Iraq and who took pride in his military career.
She also paid tribute and said: "Marc had been in theArmy for 11 years, and it was his life. He was an Army man through andthrough.
"He was always very positive about his time in Iraq,and serving his country. He enjoyed the particular job he was doing,helping the Iraqi people rebuild their lives.
"All of hisfamily are proud that he died doing the job he wanted to do. He was ahero to all of us, and everyone who knew him."
Corporal Marc Taylor was born on 1 October, 1976, and came from Ellesmere Port in Cheshire.
He joined the Army in August, 1993, and his first posting was in Germany for 1st Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, as a recovery mechanic. During this time he also served an operational tour in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia.
In July 1998, he served with the 17 Port and Maritime Regiment Workshop, based in Marchwood, before moving to 7th Air Assault Battalion, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in August, 2000, and completing a tour in Northern Ireland.
Corporal Taylor's final posting was to 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery Workshop in Tidworth.
In April, 2004, he was deployed to Iraq where he commanded a small team with B Battery Royal Horse Artillery, and was responsible for the mentoring and training of the Serious Crimes Unit of the Basra Police.
He died on the outskirts while escorting a visit to a new housing project, when his vehicle was attacked. He died alongside another soldier, Gunner David Lawrence.
The Ministry of Defence said in a statement: "He was a calm, confident leader who easily gained the respect of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
"He was a first class Team Commander. Corporal Taylor was a devoted husband and father. In the year he had been with the Regiment he made many good friends and will be sorely missed by all, in particular the members of the Workshop and B Battery."
