We spent many holidays in North Wales with the Jones and Marchant families. The cousins would always talk about a mystical woman called “Jeeps”. I remember thinking, Who is this person my cousins have named after a 4x4? “Jeeps” turned out to be GP, Granny Pam. What a woman she was. Funny, independent and wonderfully mad.

I loved visiting GP’s house as a child and feeding the chickens. When she lived with the Jones clan in the old farmhouse, I have this vivid image of her wandering out of the woods like an old wizard who had been gathering ingredients for a potion, and Manny or Bethan, who were probably 16 or 17, running towards her shouting, “Jeeps!” and giving her a big hug. It always reminded me of how deeply her closest family loved her.

One thing I can definitely thank GP for is my love of restaurants. I loved visiting Herbs in Bangor. On arrival from the street, you were always greeted by either Nick or GP at the upstairs kitchen window. The food was always incredible there, and it felt so special as a young man to walk in and think, I’m actually related to the owner. I never actually said this. I was far too shy. But when Manny, Fay or Bethan would be chatting to the waitress in rapid Welsh, it gave me the same feeling.

These are just a few of the wonderful memories I have of GP, and I feel privileged to have spent time with her and the wonderful family she created in North Wales. Although I cannot be there with you all, my thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Fond memories of barbeques at GP's as a child! Bringing my own potato waffles and sosmix sausages/burgers, and playing in the wonderful garden with Bethan and all the other kids. A wonderfully warm lady, with a heart of gold 💜
