Donald JohnMCLACHLANLoving husband, devoted father and storied journalist, Donald John McLachlan died peacefully in Boca Raton, Florida on October 15, 2021, after a period of declining health. Born on April 11, 1938, in Castle Douglas to John and Anne (Torrance) McLachlan, he joined the Royal Air Force at 19 to see the world. When he shipped to the Middle East in 1957, it was the first time he had been more than 50 miles from home. Shortly after returning to Scotland, Donald attended a local dance where he "cut in" on a hapless young farmer who was dancing with the belle of the ball, Sheila Picken. Donald and Sheila were married in 1962 in Auchencairn before moving to London. Three kids - Callum, Moira, and Niall - followed in short order. From the beginning, Donald's children were his pride and joy. Donald left school early, but his education continued throughout his life. He was a voracious reader, deep thinker, and highly entertaining raconteur. His first job as a junior reporter with the Galloway News at 16 led to a long and varied career as a journalist. His work took the family to the US for a few years in the late 60s and his coverage of the Civil Rights Movement left a deep impression on him. He fell in love with the promise of America and leapt at the chance to return for good in 1976. Donald did indeed see the world, but he was happiest at home surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his sister, Moira. He is survived by Sheila, his beloved and devoted wife of 59 years, his adoring children, Callum (Cathy), Moira (Rob) and Niall (Erin), and grandchildren, Skye, Rory and Brett. He was much loved and will be sorely missed.
