In Loving Memory of Grenville (Gren)
I first met Gren when we were just 10 years old at Prestbury St Mary's Junior School. Though the early memories are a little hazy, I remember endless hours of football, tennis, climbing trees, and playing music together. Gren was always the better sportsman—faster, more skilful—but that was never an issue between us. If anything, we all looked up to him for it.
On the football pitch, he was our talisman. When Gren got the ball, you just knew something special was going to happen. He had that magic touch, and we all followed his lead.
He also opened the door to a whole world of music—Genesis, Supertramp, Steely Dan, Tubular Bells—bands my own dad wouldn’t have played at home. That musical bond stayed with us for life.
Though we went our separate ways in adulthood, whenever we met it was like no time had passed. Gren was never a stranger, always a friend. I’ll always cherish the easy laughter, deep conversations, and the shared soundtrack of our youth.
It’s been heartbreaking to see how cruelly MSA affected him in recent years. He was taken far too soon. But his memory, his music, and his spirit live on in all of us who knew and loved him.
Rest easy, old friend.
