I am very sorry indeed to hear of Bob's death. I first met him in 1988, when I replaced him in the History department in Sheffield while he was on a fellowship in Chicago. I got to know Bob after his return to Sheffield. He was always so kind and supportive to me. He was, of course, a major scholar in his field, whose work will always be read. My condolences to all his family.
