Fond memories of my very dear old friend. A local football legend, a boxing historian and keen golfer in later life. Every body’s favourite Hanley Market Trader.
An original member of Trumpet FC (only two of us left now) in the late 50’s and early 60’s playing friendly games against all comers and winning most. They were never in an official Sunday League but joined the Saturday Longton League 2 in 1965 taking over Shelley Furnaces fixtures. Gaining promotion to League 1 that first season they were then required to change their name. Choosing Hanley Town FC in 1966 for whom Owen was manager for many years during their early glory days. A prime mover in developing their ground.
Owen was best man at my wedding more than 50 years ago, a mentor, drinking partner and confidant, a friendship which has lasted the passage of both time and distance.
Owen passed away seven days before the 70th Wedding Anniversary to his lovely wife Liz. A celebration we were all looking forward to.
I will miss him and trust the Lord will keep him safe until we meet again.
