This photo absolutely captures the lovely, spirited person Emrys was. I am privileged to have known him for nearly 50 years, and he will always be remembered for his fighting spirit and his contribution to community development and the Co-operative Movement in Wales.
I have especially fond memories of his role in establishing the South Wales Anti-Poverty Action Centre as a representative of Merthyr Tydfil Civic Society. Our success was in no small way due to his understanding of Valley culture and politics and his impatience for radical change. Emrys became our vice chair and made a crucial contribution in our efforts to promote agency and voice for the marginalised and disheartened.
Emrys embodied a principled and practical approach to a wide range of social and economic issues underpinned by Co-operative Values and Principles. Working with him in establishing Merthyr Tydfil Housing Association in 1978 and the eventual renovation of Dowlais Stables & now with over 1200 housing units, is but one example
I recall a lively two-hour conversation last November recounting past and continuing campaigns. One memory being his role in leading the way in co-designing a proper Council House points system in Merthyr by engaging with local people in finding a solution - an important lesson for many politicians today.
Fond farewell Emrys, you will always be remembered as a true son of Wales - much-respected comrade and fellow co-operator more so a true friend.
