George EdwardSHIELDSIt is with great sadness that we announce the death of George Edward Shields on Saturday, 6 June 2026, at the age of 97.
George was born in Darlington, County Durham on 8 May 1929, and was the third of four children. He left home at 18 undertaking National Service. On his return, he trained as a Municipal Engineer and worked across the country before settling in Accrington.
Before his retirement in 1985, he spent the last 15 years of his career as Assistant Borough Engineer and Surveyor for Hyndburn Borough Council. He was the chief architect behind Hyndburn Sports Centre, and many of the roads and parks across Rishton, Accrington, and Great Harwood came about through his work.
George loved his golf and could be found on the course most mornings at Accrington Golf Club. He was honoured to become a life member at 80 and played until he was 92 years old.
His faith was a constant throughout his life, and he was a devoted parishioner of St Anne's and St Joseph's RC parish.
He leaves his loving wife Marjorie - to whom he was married for almost 60 years, his children Helen and Simon, and his four grandsons Samuel, Joseph, Matthew, and James, who he adored. He was also a much-loved father-in-law to Peter and Rachel, as well as an uncle, great uncle, and friend to many.
The funeral service for George will take place at Accrington Crematorium on Wednesday, 1 July at 12.20pm. Family and friends will then gather to celebrate his life.
Family flowers only. Any donations in memory of George will be gifted Accrington Golf Club for their youth programme, supporting the upcoming golfers of tomorrow.
George was loved by all who knew him, and he will live in our hearts and memories forever.
