JillSMITH (MURTON)Jill Mary Smith (neé Murton) of Wokingham passed away peacefully at home on May 10, 2022, aged 83. Jill was born to Edith and Frank Murton in Bishop’s Stortford in 1939 and grew up in Barnet. She met Bob in 1957 and they married at All Saints Church, Whetstone in 1959 and in 1962 they moved to Scarborough. They had two sons, David and Nigel. After moving to Wokingham from Scarborough in 1969, Jill went on to an administrative career at Racal (now Vodaphone) and, later, ICI Jealott’s Hill from which she retired in 2002. She was an active member of the West Forest Townswomen’s Guild and U3A. Avid travelers and sailors, Jill and Her husband spent nearly 40 years sailing the coasts of southern England, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and France. After retirement, they moored their sloop, Sausalito, in La Roche-Bernard on the Brittany coast where she spent her days exploring France and devouring mystery novels and French food. Jill’s enjoyment of the high seas didn’t stop on the deck of the Sausalito. She and her husband enjoyed cruising the world including the coastal United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and many transatlantic crossings. In 2009, they set off on the journey of a lifetime - a four-month cruise around the world aboard the newly launched Queen Victoria. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert; her sister, Jan (Neil) of Muswell Hill, London; sons Nigel (Leah) of Austin, Texas, United States; and David (Jenny) of Grove, Oxfordshire; grandchildren Annie (James), Luke, Toby (Sarah), Ben and great-grandson, Isaac. A memorial service will be held on 7 June 2022 at 1:00pm at the Easthampstead Crematorium in Bracknell and streamed online (details available via the link below.)
