So very sad to learn of Hazel’s passing. As a member of Rolls-Royce Male Voice Choir for several years her expertise and determined search for perfection was a huge influence to myself and other choristers. Many of us were astonished at her ability to shape and command thirty grown men to her specific requirements often with the slightest of command. She demanded complete attention and dedication and inspired choir members to work hard to ever greater results. Her impact has been enormous and her legacy will live on.
Yet, despite her iron will at the podium, Hazel was generous, supportive and kindly as a friend. One might go through life and not get to know many truly great people but, for me, Hazel was certainly that. Her musicianship, judgement and sheer refinement were exemplary.
Occasionally, in recent years, I have had to act as md and my first thoughts have been, “What would Hazel do?“.
