Sorry, I had to add a memory, a moment in time, one of many mis-adventure that I had with David, that somehow epitomises how things sometimes just "happened" around us...

On one occasion, travelling at night from Banja Luka to Sarajevo, we were in his Jeep Cherokee, and it was snowing.

Not the little piffle of snow we always get here in England, PROPER snow, we could not see the edge of the road, other than tall flags, setup for just such bad weather. The snow hitting the windscreen was huge great white flakes in the headlights, and it was so taxing on the brain, that there was a large queue of cars, one would lead for a mile or two, pull over, drop to the back, and this would gradually inch you forward till it was your turn at the front again.

Anyway, we came to a large river crossing, with a bridge straight over, and a turn off to the right. Someone had already hit the turn sign, and we didn't see the edge, so rather than carry straight on over the bridge, we caught the side of the slope down, turning to the right rather than straight across! I will always remember being in a car, banging over rocks, at 45 degrees, passing a car on the road below, and I have etched in my brain, the frightened look of that driver, as we bumped and ground over those rocks, and bounced in front of him, with a drop of 4 or 5 feet.

We got back on the road, too scared to stop in case the car WAS broken, and proceeded the rest of the way at 5 or 10 miles per hour.

The jeep was OK, tough car!

We were less so, a stiff drink later on.

To David.

This is Not David's actual car, but I'm sure it is just as tough. Maybe!

How can best I describe my dear friend and colleague in the UN, David Wright.

It is so hard.

I worked with David nearly 10 years. In all that time, we had some great laughs, more than one beer, or wine, or two, and a lot of work.

I really do not remember any cross words, with me at least.

He was professional to a fault, knew his Customs, and did not suffer fools at all well, when it came to work. He was there to reform their procedures, had been asked to reform their customs procedures, and did not take "because we have always done it that way" as an excuse not to change.

He was also a warm and generous man, On one occasion, thanks to the strange contracts of the UN, and my car breaking down on the way to Bosnia, he gladly loaned me some money to cover the car repair (or rather replacement). He would never dream of complaining about that, or asking for the money back, I did pay it back of course, but as far as he was concerned if I needed it then I needed it, and no rush, but I did an ear bashing about managing my finances a bit better, quite rightly. :-) more because he worried about how I would have managed, if he had not helped.

We had some great family times together, especially in Jordan.

David will be in my memory for the rest of my life, as one of the greatest characters, and friend, that I have ever known.

Sally and I, and our children Peter, Kirsty, Tamara and Stephen, send all our love and best wishes to Carol, Charlotte and Elisabeth and "young" Jonathon.

Sleep Well David,

Sean.
