Answering Popular Questions About Funerals

Have you ever seen those videos on social media where a celebrity will answer questions about themselves, but the questions are all the most popular things that people are typing into Google? Honestly, it makes for an interesting way of getting some quick answers to the sorts of questions that you’d always wondered about. So, of course, I thought we could have a look and see what questions people are asking Google about funerals, and then do our best to answer them!
I think when people are asking this question, they are probably looking to find out if they can get any help with funeral costs and how they might go about claiming them.
GOV.UK has a page that talks about their ‘Funeral Expenses Payment’, a sum of money that can be claimed if you receive certain benefits, and there’s also a page on
Money Helper with some more information, including details of the ‘Children’s Funeral Fund’.
A very common question, but a tough one to answer, as it all depends on the individual's situation, wishes, location, etc. Both
Which? and
Money Saving Expert have put together some useful information, so I would advise starting there, but you could also speak to your local funeral director and get some personalised advice directly from a professional.
Money seems to be high on the priority list with these questions, and this one gets straight to the point, asking what it is that makes funerals so expensive. Looking at comment threads, it seems to be quite a common belief that the funeral industry is in some way trying to take advantage of the grieving, but Sunderland based funeral director
Jayne Prior has answered this question from the perspective of a funeral professional, and does a great job of explaining where a lot of the costs come from.
I had never even heard of ‘funeral potatoes’ before stumbling across this question, but apparently lots of people are searching for the same answer as me! Funeral potatoes are an American dish that get their name from being traditionally served on a buffet table at the wake. Served in a casserole dish, this concoction sees shredded up hash browns mixed with onion, canned cream of chicken soup, sour cream and cheese, all topped with crushed up crisps, and then baked in the oven until the cheese is melted and the top is crisp and golden.
This is an interesting question, as I wonder what answer people are really looking for here? Do they want to know if there’s a celebrity funeral happening today, maybe? Or are they just curious as to what funerals are happening in their local area? Either way, the top search result just so happens to be funeral-notices.co.uk, where you can search your local area and find funerals happening near you.
Hopefully we’ve answered a few of your burning questions, but if you have any more that you would like us to answer, then please leave them in the comments below!
