Lupus, also known as ‘systemic lupus erythematosus’, actually has an interesting etymology. ‘Lupus’ is Latin for ‘wolf’ and ‘erythro’ is derived from the Greek word for ‘red’. The disease was named this way because of the rash that was supposed to resemble a wolf’s bite.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues. This can cause the rashes that were mentioned above, also extreme fatigue, joint and muscle pains, as well as an array of other symptoms such as light sensitivity, headaches and migraines. All of these symptoms can severely impact a person's quality of life and ability to work.
Lupus is an uncommon disease that is complex and poorly understood, meaning that diagnosis can often take a long time while the symptoms and signs go unrecognised. Meanwhile the disease can cause irreversible damage to the body’s organs and tissues.
Starting out life as the British SLE Aid Group in 1978,
Lupus UK was founded in November 1990, and became a registered charity in December 1995. Their mission is to create a world where people with lupus can live full and active lives. They believe that by providing information about lupus and offering support to those who suffer from it, their collective voices will be heard and we can get vitally important earlier diagnoses.
Lupus Uk set out their values as the following:
One great way of supporting Lupus UK is by raising money in memory of a loved one, which is just what the families of
Davina Mary Moore-Read and
Elaine Palmer decided to do here on
funeral-notices.co.uk.
If you want to raise money in memory of a loved one in the event of their passing, just speak to your funeral director about adding it on to their Funeral Notice.
