How to make Earth Day 2023 the best one ever

Did you know that there’s a National Hamster Day? How about a National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day? Or International Sword Swallowers Day..?

There seems to be a day for just about everything, and if there isn’t one yet, then it’s probably just a matter of time!

So if we can find the time in our lives to appreciate sword swallowers and hamsters, then it is only fitting that we acknowledge the planet they live on.

When is Earth Day and what does it mean?

Earth Day happens every year on 22nd April, marking the anniversary of the beginning of the modern environmental movement in the USA in 1970. Since then the movement has gone global, and is observed and acknowledged by people and governments around the world.

The main aim of present day Earth Day is to acknowledge the ravages that climate change is having on our planet, and to suppress it by changing human behaviour and creating environmentally positive policy changes around the world. With more than a billion people already marking this day annually, together we can rise up and demand greater protection for our planet.

How can you get involved in Earth Day 2023?

This year, EARTHDAY.ORG are asking people to ‘Invest In Our Planet’ through a number of initiatives that you can get involved with:

Climate Literacy
EARTHDAY.ORG believes that every learner in every school in the world should receive a climate and environmental education. You can read more about it here, as well as sign a couple of petitions to help make it a reality.

End Plastics
Break free from the single use plastics that litter our environment and cause harm to marine life and human health, as well as clogging up waste streams and landfills. On this page you will find a toolkit to help you learn more about single use plastics and how you can help. There’s also a calculator to discover your plastic footprint.

Global Cleanup
An easy way to get stuck in and make an instant difference is to join or organise a clean up in your local area. This could just be as simple as taking a stroll down your own street and picking up litter as you go, or you could organise meeting up with some friends or colleagues at a beach or a park and spend an hour collectively tidying it up. You can find more information on clean ups here.

Plant Trees
Since 2010, EARTHDAY.ORG has planted tens of millions of trees with The Canopy Project. Planting trees is one of the biggest and cheapest ways of taking harmful CO2 out of the atmosphere to tackle the climate crisis. Not only that, but they provide vital habitats for animals, they help regulate local air temperatures, and they purify the air we breathe. If you don’t have the space to plant a tree of your own, then you can donate towards The Canopy Project and help get more trees planted around the world.

Whatever you decide to do, post a picture on your social media with the hashtags #InvestInOurPlanet and #EarthDay, and make sure to tag EARTHDAY.ORG so that they can see how you’re getting involved.

Thank you.
