Valentine's Day: A Time to Remember and Honour Our Lost Loved Ones

Valentine’s Day is nearly upon us once again, and here at funeral-notices.co.uk, we understand how difficult this day can be for those whose loved ones are no longer with them.

But if Valentine’s Day is essentially about celebrating love, and love is something that stays with us long after the person has departed, then maybe we should take the time to celebrate the life and love we once shared with that person?

Transforming Grief into Remembrance

When a day like Valentine’s Day comes around, it’s only natural to focus on the grief we feel for the person we lost. What could be a very difficult day can also be transformed into a day of joyous remembrance, focusing on the love we shared with that person and honouring our memories of them.

A great way of doing this is to visit places that they loved, or that were special to you both. Alternatively, you could cook their favourite meal, and sit and eat it while watching their favourite movie or listening to their favourite music.

Sharing Love Stories and Connecting With Others

You should never feel embarrassed to share stories of your loved one, and Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to talk about what made them special to you. If they have a notice here on funeral-notices.co.uk, then why not visit it and leave such a story as a tribute?

You could also take this opportunity to connect with others who might also be grieving on Valentine’s Day. If you open up about how you are feeling and share some of your favourite memories, not only will that help to give you some relief, but you could be helping someone else to open up too.

Self-Care on Valentine’s Day

The absolute best thing you can do on Valentine’s Day, is to look after yourself. If that means doing any of the suggestions above, that’s great, but if all that means to you is taking a long walk, sitting in a hot bath, and eating ice cream in front of a weepy romance film, then that’s absolutely fine too. Your mental health can suffer when you’re grieving, and self-care is something that is vital to helping yourself heal.

To many, Valentine’s Day is about love, and for others, Valentine’s Day is about grief. We believe that it’s about both, because what is grief, if not love persevering?
