Why having Grandchildren is good for your health

It will come as no surprise to learn that most grandparents feel happier spending time with their grandchildren. However, it is more than just a good feeling as it can have huge benefits for their physical and psychological health, and the closer the bond, the stronger the benefits.

The relationship between grandchildren and grandparents is mutually beneficial. Grandparents impart wisdom to their grandchildren and studies have shown that grandchildren also provide health benefits to their grandparents.

Grandchildren Lower The Risk Of Depression

For kids, grandparents provide stability, safety, wisdom and fun. In return, caring for grandchildren can help stave off depression, boost social connections and keep older adults mentally sharp.

In fact, an emotionally close relationship between grandparent and grandchild is associated with fewer symptoms of depression for both generations.

Two thirds of young people say they are most inspired by their own grandparents rather than by celebrities, and this in itself leads to a greater sense of pride and confidence in themselves throughout their own lives.

Babysitting Boosts Brain Function

A 2014 study found that when older people spent one day a week looking after grandchildren, their mental ability was higher, and their cognitive scores improved. Hanging out with little ones once a week is good for your mental acuity.

Grandparents can teach their grandchildren life lessons and tell them stories about their lives and the rest of the family. Grandchildren can also teach their grandparents a lot by keeping them up to date with what’s new and help them with technology. Both of these things, along with other play and activities such as puzzles and games, keep the brain functioning on a higher level for longer.

Keeping up with kids requires a lot of energy, especially as we get older, and while it’s important not to overdo it, this activity is incredibly beneficial to grandparents.

In a recent study, 58% of grandparents said they participated in physical activities such as playing sports, exercising, and gardening with their grandchildren, and 55% reported going on outings to museums and amusement parks.

Taking a grandchild on a neighbourhood stroll or running around the garden with older children benefits the child’s health and your own.

I agree with everything in this blog. As a 69 year old grandmother, a day with my 3 year old granddaughter can be tiring but brings so much laughter, joy and fulfilment!
