World Mental Health Day is organised by the
World Health Organisation and takes place on 10th October every year. The theme for this year is
'Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority'.
World Mental Health Day exists to raise awareness of mental health across the globe. For over 70 years the organisation has been working to ensure that mental health is treated on a par with physical health. Mental health is health. It is something we all have, to greater or lesser extents. It is important to look out for your own mental health as well as others around you. Mental health problems exist in our lives, families, workplaces and communities, impacting everyone.
According to the
Mental Health Foundation:
"We need to do as much as possible to prevent mental ill-health – as individuals and as a society. We will continue to call on national and local government to prioritise reducing the factors known to pose a risk to people’s mental health, enhancing those known to protect it and creating the conditions needed for people to thrive.
"World Mental Health Day is also a chance to talk about mental health in general, how we need to look after it, and how important it is to talk about things and get help if you are struggling." One of the main ways to get involved is to promote World Mental Health Day on your social media. The Mental Health Foundation have resources available on their website to download
here.
If you fancy doing something more active to support World Mental Health Day, you can walk, run or stroll your way to better mental health this November. As part of World Mental Health Day, you can take part in the 12,000 steps a day challenge in November which will improve your mental health and raise valuable funds for the charity:
"As the dark nights and short days are approaching, this challenge is designed to get you moving and feel physically and mentally healthy. It can be harder for us to get outside during the winter months but exercising outdoors in nature may help to prevent or reduce feelings of anger, tiredness and sadness.
"You can complete your steps however you like, whether it’s out on a daily walk, on your commute, at the gym or even walking around your house! There are lots of apps you can use to track your miles, such as MyFitnessPal, or you could use a smartwatch or see the ‘Health’ app on your phone."
